| Named for Belmont Mansion. Even early visitors to Belmont, the eighteenth century West Philadelphia farmhouse built by the Peters family, were struck by the city view it offered. Printmakers often sold views of country houses like Belmont, but here they showed the Philadelphia skyline as seen from it's entrance. So many people came to see the vista that, beginning in 1870, the mansion supported a restaurant. Teas and meals were served for more than a century.* * from Philadelphia Then and Now by Kenneth Finkel and Susan Oyama ©1988 |
